Above the Clouds: A Trip to Obudu Mountain Resort
Ascending into the misty highlands of Cross River State to discover Nigeria's most spectacular mountain retreat — where cool air, cattle ranches, and breathtaking views redefine what the country is capable of.
Most people don't associate Nigeria with mountains, cool weather, and cable cars. Obudu changes all of that in one ascent. The Obudu Mountain Resort — perched at over 1,500 metres in the Sankwala Mountains near the Cameroon border — is one of those places that genuinely shocks you into silence. The drive up the winding mountain road is an adventure in itself, the road hugging sheer cliff faces with valleys yawning thousands of feet below. At the top, the air is cool and clean, clouds drift below you, cattle graze on rolling green hills, and the world feels impossibly large and impossibly quiet. It is Nigeria as very few people ever get to see it.

Practical Tips
What I Loved
- The cable car ride — the views from above are the kind that stay with you long after you've come back down.
- Waking up to find yourself above the cloud line — there is truly nothing like it in Nigeria.
- The chilly mountain air after months of coastal heat; bring a jacket and wear it with gratitude.
Things to Know
- The mountain road is steep and winding — if you are prone to motion sickness, come prepared.
- Book accommodation well in advance, especially during the dry season peak months.
- Carry warm clothing; temperatures at the summit can drop significantly, especially at night.
