Walking on Water: Jabi Lake, Abuja
Discovering the surreal, almost meditative joy of wading through the shallow, glassy waters of Jabi Lake — one of Abuja's most unexpected and beloved experiences.
Nobody tells you that Jabi Lake has a stretch where you can literally walk on water — or at least feel that way. At certain points, the lake shallows out so dramatically that you find yourself standing waist-deep, then knee-deep, then ankle-deep, the water so still and clear that the sky reflects perfectly beneath your feet. It became a running joke on this trip that we had all become disciples. But beneath the laughter there was something genuinely striking about it — the openness of the lake, the Abuja skyline shimmering in the distance, the feeling of being suspended between heaven and water. Jabi by evening, with the sun dropping behind the hills, is a different city altogether.

Practical Tips
What I Loved
- The shallow-water walk — peaceful, playful, and genuinely surreal in the best possible way.
- The evening light on the lake; the golden hour here is something photographers dream about.
- The array of lakeside food spots — cold drinks, suya, and fresh fish with your feet practically in the water.
Things to Know
- The lake bottom can be uneven — wear water sandals or old shoes you don't mind getting wet.
- Weekends get busy; visit on a weekday morning for a quieter, more meditative experience.
- Boat rides are available and affordable — worth it for a full view of the lake from the water.
