Where the New Year Roars: Crossover at Gurara Waterfalls

Welcoming a new year at the edge of Gurara Falls — where the thunder of water, the warmth of company, and the promise of new beginnings all arrive at once.

There are many ways to cross into a new year, but few as primal and as beautiful as standing at the edge of Gurara Waterfalls as midnight approaches. Located near Suleja in Niger State, Gurara is one of Nigeria's most magnificent waterfalls — wide, powerful, and theatrical in every season. We arrived on the 31st of December with a group of friends, and from the moment the falls came into view, it was clear that this was no ordinary year-end gathering. The roar of the water set the tone — bold, unstoppable, forward-moving. As the countdown hit zero and the new year arrived, the sound of the falls drowned out every cheer, and honestly, nothing could have been more fitting. The water kept moving. And so did we.

Practical Tips

What I Loved

  • The sheer scale and sound of the falls — it fills every sense and makes the world feel vast and alive.
  • Crossing into the new year with that roar as your soundtrack — there is nothing quite like it.
  • The camaraderie of the trip; shared experiences at places like Gurara forge lasting bonds.

Things to Know

  • The site gets very busy around the festive season — arrive early to claim a good spot near the falls.
  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet; the mist from the falls is generous and unavoidable.
  • The road from Suleja can be rough in parts — go in a sturdy vehicle and travel in convoy if possible.
